Sherrone Moore’s era at Michigan is off to a rollercoaster start, after a crazy four-month. These first four months were filled with ups and downs from coaching changes to recruiting to arrests for OWI( operating a vehicle while intoxicated) and now this week is no different. Moore who secured his first commitment as a head coach on Monday gets dealt a blow on Wednesday with DJ Waller entering the transfer portal.
Michigan Wolverines Defensive Back Coach Lamar Morgan has been faced with movement throughout the secondary this offseason. Keon Sabb was the first major piece to enter the portal after the 30-day window opened with the departure of Jim Harbaugh, Sabb would commit to Alabama.
Sabb's transfer was less of a blow after Quinten Johnson’s decided to return to Michigan after deciding not to enter the NFL Draft. That was short-lived after projected starter Rod Moore sustained a season-ending knee injury in spring practice. Now Morgan is faced with Waller's decision to enter the spring transfer portal.
Waller who was entering his second year at Michigan is coming off a freshman season where he had 11 total tackles and 1 pass breakup. Most believed that heading into the fall Waller would be competing for the starting spot at DB to play opposite All-American Will Johnson. The decision for Waller does come as a surprise with the belief that he was going to see plenty of playing time this fall. But just maybe, it shouldn’t have after Jyaire Hill tweeted three fire emojis my turn back on April 22.
Waller's decision now forces Michigan to hit the portal to find added depth in the secondary. The good news Michigan still has several players on their roster who can step in, play and be productive right away this fall. They also have arguably the best defensive back in the country Will Johnson who will take a lot of the pressure off whoever ends up playing opposite him. If I had to BET my money would be on sophomore Jyaire Hill starting Aug 31, against Fresno State.
