Virginia Tech Not Satisfied With Last Year's Success

Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies graced the stage as Day 2 of the Atlantic Coast Conference Media Day kicked off.

The Hokies were focused on now as they honored last year’s record with a commitment to improve daily to produce the desired results. Coach Brent Pry has Virginia Tech fighting complacency from a successful season and is prepared to make a push to the top of the ACC.

Brent Pry’s Outlook

Pry, in his third year, was steadfast with the requirements it takes to succeed as a Hokie and it begins with a strong brotherhood. Pry took a minute to honor his mentor, Penn State coach James Franklin. The Virginia Tech coach emphasized three key points about playing there. He stressed being tough, committed, and believing in the culture and process to build a successful program.

“We’ve got great people that want to be at Tech for the right reasons, players and coaches," Pry said. "We had players who decided to return and spurn the NFL, spurn other opportunities to make more money. We have coaches who turn down opportunities to stay at Virginia Tech. There’s a belief in our team and our process, the culture is strong and, to me, that’s where it starts.”

Virginia Tech Defense

Virginia Tech’s defense had key players there for ACC Media Days. Cornerback Dorian Strong and defensive lineman Antwuan Powell-Ryland have a similar eye toward 2024. Both players spoke about how focused the Hokies' defense has been. It's not settling on the growth and results from last season. Both players believe that last year’s success is better used as a catapult for continued success. But they appreciate the fans' accolades and adornment.

Both players would like to score a touchdown in their final season with Virginia Tech. When asked about what he wants to accomplish, Powell-Ryland said, “I want to score a touchdown. I got to. I don’t know how I’m going to do it but I got to make a way!”

“I want a Pick-6 in Lane Stadium," Strong said. "I’ve been fortunate enough to catch a couple of picks in my career and I have 1 in Lane Stadium. I felt that roar the first time, but now I want to catch multiple picks in Lane Stadium.”

Conclusion

Virginia Tech is entering the 2024 season focused on football and family. The Hokies believe in each other and look to on last season's 7-6 record. After ending the 2023 campaign with an impressive bowl win, the Hokies are confident that their offseason work will result in even more success and solidify them as a formidable foe in the ACC.
