West Virginia University and their head football coach Neal Brown, agreed on a 1-year contract extension. This new deal runs through the 2027 season. This brought a mixed reaction from Mountaineer Nation, some folks were asking what has Coach Brown done to deserve this, and others were happy. Experts are saying this is a win for West Virginia, and most would tend to agree because when he arrived in 2019, he did not have a very good roster to work with, but through recruiting, and the transfer portal we are finally seeing what Neal Brown can do with a team he developed.
Contact Details
For the next three years, Coach Brown is taking a pay cut of $400,000.00 he wants those funds reinvested back into the program. He wants a salary increase for his assistants and support staff.
2024 Salary from $4.1 million to $4 million
2025 Salary from $4.2 million to $4 million
2026 Salary from $4.4 million to $4.3 million
Looking at this contract, as a whole, it is a good deal for both parties. If Coach Brown is fired before December 31, 2024, The university would only owe Coach Brown 85% of his total contract. If Coach Brown is let go after 2025 he would receive 75% of his total contract.
The bright spot for Coach Neal Brown is he will only owe 10% of his total contract if he leaves the university after the 2025 football season.
Finally, the administration is firmly behind the football program. A big thank you to President Dr. Gordon Gee and Athletic Director Wren Baker for getting this deal done for Coach Brown. Now everyone can enjoy “The Climb” with this team. Look for the Mountaineers to make some noise this season.
