In the 2023 recruiting class, there are nine players from Mobile and the surrounding cities (Theodore and Eight Mile).
Of course, you're going to have your big four and five star players leave for their shot to play in the Power 5. Everyone wants that big time spotlight and recognition. But for the players that do not commit to the big Power 5 schools some tend to stay home and play for the local team, the South Alabama Jaguars.
South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack is trying his best to keep athletes home in the city of Mobile. Of the nine players below, four have decided to stay local and help the Jaguars go after a Sun Belt championship in 2023.
Cole Blaylock - ATH (UMS WRIGHT) USA COMMIT
Blaylock rushed for a whopping 2,029 yards on 269 attempts. This resulted in 27 touchdowns, averaging 7.5 yards per carry, and 13 total 100-yard games. Blaylock also had three 200-yard games, and one incredible 311-yard performance on the ground.
Blaylock also caught 16 passes for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns. (According to MaxPreps)
Trent Thomas - TE (Cottage Hill Christian Academy) USA COMMIT
Thomas stays home after amassing 130 total tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Of those tackles, 80 of them were solo and 15 of them for loss. However, USA is listing him as a TE at 6'6" and 220 lbs, it's easy to see why. (MaxPreps)

Thanks to today's transfer portal the Jags are able to grab hometown guys like Lucas Taylor (IOL from Mississippi State) who played high school ball at St. Paul and bring them back home to Mobile.
The southern portion of Alabama is laden with talent. With a new stadium and a program on the rise, look for the local Jaguars to keep more of this talent at home in the future.
