Before the 2023 season, Texas State had a record of 40-92 over the prior 11 seasons at the Division I level. Enter head coach GJ Kinne and his "Take Back Texas" mantra, and the Bobcats had their most successful season ever, finishing with an 8-5 record. Texas State set 20 program records (13 offensive, five defensive, and three special teams) and recorded its first-ever bowl win over Rice in the Servpro First Responder Bowl in Dallas.

What Quarterback Drama?

Texas State looked to continue the momentum into the offseason by securing the transfer commitment of quarterback Jayden de Laura from Arizona on January 15th. Most Bobcats fans did not welcome de Laura, knowing that a civil lawsuit for a 2018 sexual assault case involving him was settled just one day before he committed to the team. Within a week of committing, de Laura withdrew from the university and the football team, likely due to the pushback from the fans.

Prior to de Laura's arrival, Texas State expected TJ Finley to be its starter, but he entered the transfer portal one day after de Laura had committed, and signed with Western Kentucky on January 22nd. Finley had started all 13 games in 2023 and finished with 3,439 yards passing, 24 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Amazingly, coach Kinne pulled a rabbit out of a hat and was able to secure a transfer commitment from Jordan McCloud, the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year at James Madison. The departure of head coach Curt Cignetti to Indiana obviously helped to open the door for this to occur. McCloud threw for 3,657 yards and 35 touchdowns last year while leading James Madison to an 11-2 record. All of a sudden, the 2024 Texas State football schedule does not appear as daunting as it once did.

three impressions of the 2024 Texas STATE football schedule

  1. The season opens with three home games, including visits from UTSA and Arizona State to San Marcos. The schedule presents a great opportunity for Texas State to start 3-0 with two significant victories at Bobcat Stadium.

  2. Can we ask the Sun Belt to replace one of the road games with James Madison? Who doesn't want to see McCloud compete against his old team in a conference game on the road?

  3. It's great to see the rivalry renewed with Sam Houston, with the game at NRG Stadium in Houston.
